Recorded in August 2020 from the Harold Pinter Theatre in London after the production’s sold-out run closed early due to the coronavirus pandemic, the play is directed by Ian Rickson and directed for screen by Ross MacGibbon .     Back to News & Press A Christmas Carol rehearsal images released Friday, 13 November 2015 Rehearsal photography is released today of the cast and creative team for A Christmas Carol, giving the first, behind-the-scenes look at Academy award-winning actor Jim Broadbent preparing for his long-awaited return to stage as Ebenezer Scrooge alongside fellow cast Adeel Akhtar, Amelia Bullmore, Keir Charles and Samantha Spiro with puppeteers Jack Parker and Kim Scopes completing the ensemble. This new version of A Christmas Carol, adapted by Patrick Barlow from Charles Dickens' classic story of greed, grief, ghoulish ghosts and eleventh-hour redemption will play a strictly limited run at the Noël Coward Theatre from 30 November to 30 January. Many performances are sold out with best availability in January. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to Bob Cratchit and Mr. Fezziwig, Patrick Barlow's imaginative adaptation of A Christmas Carol will bring some of Dickens' most memorable characters to life at the Noël Coward Theatre this winter. Coming together to create this innovative new work are some of our most loved and mischievous maverick theatre-makers. The play is written by the Olivier award-winning and Tony nominated Patrick Barlow (The 39 Steps) with whom Jim Broadbent performed for many years in Barlow’s cult comedy troupe The National Theatre of Brent. A Christmas Carol is directed by Olivier award-winning Phelim McDermott, Artistic Director of Improbable, one of Britain’s most inventive theatre companies, who is responsible for the iconic production Shockheaded Peter. McDermott also directed Theatre of Blood at the National Theatre in which Broadbent last appeared on stage. Joining them is the critically-acclaimed designer Tom Pye (The Testament of Mary, The Death of Klinghoffer, The Low Road) and Toby Sedgwick (War Horse, The 39 Steps) as Director of Movement, Peter Mumford will design the lighting and Gareth Fry will design sound. A Christmas Carol and The Mackintosh Foundation are proud to be supporting St Martin-in-the-Fields’ Christmas Appeal by donating 50 pence for each ticket purchased. The appeal raises money to assist homeless people with shelter, food, help and advice. Nicola and Managing Director Jeremy Blocker) announced today that Merrily We Roll Along , featuring music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim , a book by George Furth , and based on the original play by George S. Kaufman & Moss Hart , will complete its 2022/23 Season. Directed by Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman and choreographed by Tim Jackson , Merrily We Roll Along is presented by special arrangement with Sonia Friedman Productions , the Menier Chocolate Factory (Artistic Director, David Babani), and Patrick Catullo , and will star Daniel Radcliffe as Charley. Merrily We Roll Along is planned for late 2022 at New York Theatre Workshop (79 E 4th Street, New York, NY 10003). Additional details, including the full cast, will be announced at a later date. Spanning three decades in the entertainment business, Merrily We Roll Along charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends — writer Mary and lyricist & playwright Charley. An inventive, cult-classic ahead of its time, Merrily We Roll Along features some of Stephen Sondheim ’s most celebrated and personal songs. Maria Friedman first directed the musical at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory which subsequently transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre to critical acclaim—the most five-star reviews in West End history—winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical. Sir Richard Eyre will direct the evocative portrait of theatre life backstage, commissioned by BBC Drama and BBC Arts for BBC Two. Inspired by Ronald Harwood’s own experiences as dresser to distinguished actor-manager Sir Donald Wolfit and set against the backdrop of World War II. The play explores the tempestuous relationship between ailing actor-manager 'Sir' (Anthony Hopkins) who runs a troupe of traveling Shakespearean players and his devoted dresser Norman (Ian McKellen) as they struggle to hold together their touring company.
