- Sonia Friedman tops The Stage 100 2017 | Sonia Friedman
Back to News & Press Sonia Friedman tops The Stage 100 2017 Thursday, 5 January 2017 The exclusive list, compiled annually by the industry’s leading newspaper, ranks the powerhouses of British theatre. Sonia described topping the list as “amazing recognition of the extraordinary people I have been privileged to work with over the year.” “I feel very grateful to The Stage for this honour and feel extremely lucky to do a job I love so much,” she added. Alistair Smith, print editor of The Stage, said, “Sonia Friedman has enjoyed a number of notable hits in recent years, but in 2016, she went stratospheric. “Harry Potter has been an extraordinary success both on a box-office level and an artistic one. As long as I’ve been writing about theatre I can’t think of another show that has been as big – you’re going back to the mega-musicals of the 80s.” It has been an extraordinary 12 months for Sonia Friedman Productions (SFP) achieving incredible successes with their productions of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child Parts One and Two , Nice Fish , Funny Girl , Sunny Afternoon and Dreamgirls . SFP’s co-production of The Dresser for BBC and Starz has been nominated in the category of Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television at the 74th annual Golden Globes and it was announced that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would be opening at The Lyric Theatre on Broadway in 2018. Sonia herself was awarded an OBE and was voted as one of the 10 most influential people in London by the Evening Standard. She is currently short-listed for Producer of the Year at The Stage Awards 2017 - an award she won at the event in both 2016 and 2015. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 27 January at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Up Up
- Producer Sets Aside 250 Seats for $25 Each at Every Broadway Show | Sonia Friedman
Back to News & Press Producer Sets Aside 250 Seats for $25 Each at Every Broadway Show Wednesday, 29 January 2014 It’s always the top ticket prices that grab headlines on Broadway, especially during the annual holiday bonanza when skyrocketing demand pushes premium pricing through the roof. (Want a top-tier premium seat to “The Book of Mormon?” That’ll be $477.) But this Yuletide season, one production has turned heads with prices on the other end of spectrum. Since opening at the Belasco Theater in November, the Globe Theater’s repertory stagings of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “Richard III,” pictured above, have seen weekly sales snowball to well beyond the $800,000 mark — modest compared with a megamusical, but a strong tally for a play in a relatively small theater, and robust enough to set B.O. records at the venue. It’s unusual enough that historically accurate, original-practices presentations of Elizabethan drama have become not just critical hits but popular ones as well. But what’s extraordinary about these plays is that at every single performance, 250 seats are priced at $25 each. That’s 2,000 tickets per eight-show week, or nearly a quarter of the inventory in a house that seats 1,051. The initiative, the brainchild of lead producer Sonia Friedman, goes against the grain in a Broadway economy that can seem greedy and discriminatory as prices creep ever higher. And with the production on track to recoup its $3.1 million capitalization in the first half of January, “Twelfth Night/Richard III” could stand as a model that works both as a commercial venture and as a pricing accessibility initiative. - The National Theatre's sold-out run of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST to transfer to the West End in a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions | Sonia Friedman
Back to News & Press The National Theatre's sold-out run of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST to transfer to the West End in a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions Friday, 6 June 2025 The National Theatre announces today that its sold-out, critically acclaimed production of The Importance of Being Earnest will transfer to the West End this autumn in a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions . This ‘bold and brash Wilde reboot’ (★★★★ The Times) will run for a limited season at the Noël Coward Theatre, a Delfont Mackintosh Theatre, from 18 September 2025 until 10 January 2026. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday 16 June at 12pm with over 20,000 tickets available for under £30 across the run. This ‘sparkling new production’ (★★★★★ Daily Mail) directed by Max Webster, is a joyful and flamboyant reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy. Actor and singer-songwriter, Olly Alexander (It’s a Sin , Channel 4;White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, @s ohoplace) will play the role of Algernon Moncrieff in Webster’s ‘wildly exuberant, hot pink staging of The Importance of Being Earnest’ (★★★★ FT) with further casting to be announced. SIGN UP HERE. Olly Alexander , singer, songwriter, actor, fashion icon and activist said: “I’m over the moon to be returning to a West End stage to take on the fabulous role of Algernon Moncrieff in Oscar Wilde’s most fun and favoured play. I’ve always hugely admired Wilde - he’s a true icon, not only a hugely successful and influential 19th century writer but also a trailblazing queer artist who fearlessly pushed against the expectations of society. He was a pioneer of LGBTQ+ rights before such a thing existed and I’m so excited and proud to get the chance to inhabit his work.” Max Webster , director said: "I am ecstatic that The Importance of Being Earnest is transferring to the West End starring the brilliant Olly Alexander this September for a winter run. The creative team and I really wanted to honour Oscar Wilde's life and work and celebrate his legendary wit, fabulousness and imaginative freedom with this production. We found that the play felt amazingly fresh and contemporary, and there was an incredible audience response night after night during its original run at the National Theatre. I can't wait to share this production again, with audiences in the West End, and am especially excited to work with Olly who I am certain will create a new and fabulous take on Wilde's iconic character Algenon Moncreiff.” Being sensible can be excessively boring. At least Jack thinks so. While assuming the role of dutiful guardian in the country, he lets loose in town under a false identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy takes on a similar facade. Unfortunately, living a double life has its drawbacks, especially when it comes to love. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate. ‘This exuberant production (★★★★ The i) also features set and costume designer Rae Smith , lighting designer Jon Clark , sound designer Nicola T. Chang , movement director Carrie-Anne Ingrouille , composer DJ Walde , physical comedy advisor Joyce Henderson , intimacy coordinator Ingrid Mackinnon , casting director Alastair Coomer CDG , dialect coach Hazel Holder and voice coach Shereen Ibrahim in the creative team. Webster’s ‘Wilde party of irresistible anarchic charm’ ( ★★★★ The Guardian) was first performed in the Lyttelton Theatre from 21 November 2024 until 25 January 2025. Following a sold-out run at the National Theatre, The Importance of Being Earnest was then screened as a National Theatre Live capture with over 100,000 people engaging with the cinema screenings across the UK. The Importance of Being Earnest in the West End is supported by American Express, the National Theatre’s Official Payment Partner. Up Up
