  • Producer Sets Aside 250 Seats for $25 Each at Every Broadway Show | Sonia Friedman

Back to News & Press Producer Sets Aside 250 Seats for $25 Each at Every Broadway Show Wednesday, 29 January 2014 It’s always the top ticket prices that grab headlines on Broadway, especially during the annual holiday bonanza when skyrocketing demand pushes premium pricing through the roof. (Want a top-tier premium seat to “The Book of Mormon?” That’ll be $477.) But this Yuletide season, one production has turned heads with prices on the other end of spectrum. Since opening at the Belasco Theater in November, the Globe Theater’s repertory stagings of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “Richard III,” pictured above, have seen weekly sales snowball to well beyond the $800,000 mark — modest compared with a megamusical, but a strong tally for a play in a relatively small theater, and robust enough to set B.O. records at the venue. It’s unusual enough that historically accurate, original-practices presentations of Elizabethan drama have become not just critical hits but popular ones as well. But what’s extraordinary about these plays is that at every single performance, 250 seats are priced at $25 each. That’s 2,000 tickets per eight-show week, or nearly a quarter of the inventory in a house that seats 1,051. The initiative, the brainchild of lead producer Sonia Friedman, goes against the grain in a Broadway economy that can seem greedy and discriminatory as prices creep ever higher. And with the production on track to recoup its $3.1 million capitalization in the first half of January, “Twelfth Night/Richard III” could stand as a model that works both as a commercial venture and as a pricing accessibility initiative. • Further Casting Announced for the National Theatre's West End Transfer of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST | Sonia Friedman

Back to News & Press Further Casting Announced for the National Theatre's West End Transfer of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST Thursday, 31 July 2025 The National Theatre announces today further casting for the West End transfer of its critically acclaimed production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Joining Olly Alexander, who plays the role of Algernon Moncrieff, is Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jack Worthing, Hugh Dennis as Rev. Canon Chasuble, Shobna Gulati as Miss Prism, Kitty Hawthorne as Gwendolen Fairfax, Jessica Whitehurst as Cecily Cardew, Hayley Carmichael as Merriman/Lane, and Stephen Fry as Lady Bracknell. This ‘bold and brash Wilde reboot’ (★★★★ The Times) will run for a limited season at the Noël Coward Theatre, a Delfont Mackintosh Theatre, in a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions, from 18 September 2025 until 10 January 2026. This ‘sparkling new production’ (★★★★★ Daily Mail) directed by Max Webster, is a joyful and flamboyant reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy. Max Webster , director, said: “Oscar Wilde was a master of elegance, rebellion, and razor-sharp wit. With this cast – led by the audacious brilliance of Olly Alexander, the hugely captivating Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and the legendary Stephen Fry as Lady Bracknell – we’re embracing the play’s subversive heart in a way that feels utterly now. I’d like to think Wilde would be delighted – and perhaps even a little scandalised – by this bold, joyful take on his most iconic comedy.” Stephen Fry said: "I was delighted to be asked by Max Webster to join his jubilant National Theatre production and play the formidable Lady Bracknell in the West End. Oscar Wilde has been a hugely important figure in my life and career and The Importance of Being Earnest is a play that changed my life when I first saw it aged 10. It made me understand what language can do and absolutely transported me. Wilde is a beacon to people who still believe in open thinking and adventuring with the mind and spirit. " Being sensible can be excessively boring. At least Jack thinks so. While assuming the role of dutiful guardian in the country, he lets loose in town under a false identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy takes on a similar facade. Unfortunately, living a double life has its drawbacks, especially when it comes to love. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate. Max Webster is an award-winning theatre director, specialising in spectacular new work, opera and live music events. Recent acclaimed productions include Macbeth (Donmar Warehouse/West End), Life of Pi (Sheffield Theatres/West End/Broadway), Henry V (Donmar Warehouse) and The Lorax (Old Vic). He was Associate Director at the Old Vic from 2015 until 2019 and at the Donmar Warehouse from 2020 until 2024. ‘This exuberant production’ (★★★★ The i) also features the work of set and costume designer Rae Smith , lighting designer Jon Clark , sound designer Nicola T. Chang , movement director Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, composer DJ Walde and casting director Alastair Coomer CDG. They are joined by associate director Aaliyah McKay , associate set designer Tim Blazdell, associate costume designer Johanna Coe , associate lighting designer Hector Murray and associate sound designer Chris Reid . Completing the creative team are, physical comedy advisor Joyce Henderson , intimacy coordinator Ingrid Mackinnon and dialect coach Hazel Holder. Webster’s ‘Wilde party of irresistible anarchic charm’ (★★★★ The Guardian) was first performed in the Lyttelton Theatre from 21 November 2024 until 25 January 2025. Following a sold-out run at the National Theatre, it was subsequently released to cinemas worldwide through National Theatre Live. Over 165,000 people in the UK have watched ‘this joyous production’ (★★★★The i). Over 20,000 tickets are available for under £30 across the upcoming West End run. The Importance of Being Earnest in the West End is supported by American Express, the National Theatre’s Official Payment Partner. • National Theatre Live to Broadcast Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt | Sonia Friedman

Back to News & Press National Theatre Live to Broadcast Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt Wednesday, 11 March 2020 Regarded as ‘Britain’s greatest living playwright’ (The Times), Tom Stoppard’s new play, directed by Patrick Marber (Closer, Notes on a Scandal), is an intimate drama with an epic sweep; the story of a family who made good. A passionate drama of love, family and endurance, it’s Tom Stoppard’s most humane and heart-breaking play. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna. But Hermann Merz, a manufacturer and baptised Jew married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world. Gathered in the Merz apartment in a fashionable part of the city, Hermann’s extended family are at the heart of Tom Stoppard’s epic yet intimate drama. By the time we have taken leave of them, Austria has passed through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and – for Austrian Jews – the Holocaust in which 65,000 of them were murdered. It is for the survivors to pass on a story which hasn’t ended yet. Leopoldstadt is the sixth collaboration between Sonia Friedman Productions and Tom Stoppard and reunites Stoppard, director Patrick Marber (Closer, Notes on a Scandal) and Friedman who last collaborated on Travesties in 2017. The show is currently playing to critical acclaim in Wyndham Theatre in London’s West End where it runs until June 13th. To find your nearest cinema go to http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk Up Up

  • UNCLE VANYA | Sonia Friedman

Back to Productions UNCLE VANYA This production opened on 14th January and closed 15th March 2020. ★★★★★ An exquisite production. Perfection. The Guardian In the heat of summer, Sonya ( Aimee Lou Wood ) and her Uncle Vanya ( Toby Jones ) while away their days on a crumbling estate deep in the countryside, visited occasionally only by the local doctor Astrov ( Richard Armitage ). However, when Sonya’s father Professor Serebryakov ( Ciarán Hinds ) suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena ( Rosalind Eleazar ) declaring his intention to sell the house, the polite facades crumble and long-repressed feelings start to emerge with devastating consequences. ★★★★ Ian Rickson’s striking revival. Such compassion, such life. The Times Olivier Award-winner Conor McPherson ’s stunning new adaptation of the Anton Chekhov masterpiece, Uncle Vanya , is a portrayal of life at the turn of the 20th century, full of tumultuous frustration, dark humour and hidden passions. Critically acclaimed director Ian Rickson returns to Chekhov for the first time since his landmark production of The Seagull in 2007, reuniting with BAFTA and Olivier Award-winner Toby Jones (The Birthday Party) alongside Richard Armitage , who returns to the stage six years after his Olivier Award-nominated performance in The Crucible. Uncle Vanya is designed by Rae Smith , with lighting by Bruno Poet , music by Stephen Warbeck , sound by Ian Dickinson and casting by Amy Ball CDG . Don’t miss this astonishing combination of creative talent as they breathe new life into the treasured Chekhov classic. We’re thrilled that this production is now available for schools and universities to watch via DigitalTheatre+. ★★★★ This is a Vanya for our times.
