Back to News & Press Shifters, Bush Theatre's smash hit play by Benedict Lombe and directed by Lynette Linton, transfers to the West End this summer Thursday 20 June 2024 Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Chuchu Nwagu Productions and Sonia Friedman Productions today announce that the Bush Theatre’s production of Shifters , Benedict Lombe’s intoxicating and fierce new romance will transfer to the West End this summer following a sell- out run at the Bush Theatre earlier this year. Heather Agyepong (School Girls; or The African Mean Girls Play, Lyric Hammersmith) and Tosin Cole (Netflix’s Supacell, BBC’s Doctor Who ), whose electrifying performances received critical acclaim in the original production, will reprise their roles as young lovers Des and Dre for a strictly limited season of nine weeks at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London directed by BAFTA-nominated and Evening Standard Theatre Award-winner Lynette Linton (Blues for An Alabama Sky , National Theatre; Clyde’s Donmar; August in England , Bush Theatre). Press Night on Wednesday 21 August 2024. Previews are from Monday 12 August and tickets from £20 go on general sale at 9am on Thursday 20 June 2024, with 50% of tickets for the first four weeks available at £40 or under. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the production from the intimacy of the stage with on-stage seating for every performance. This epic and universal love story is about the enduring power of memory and young love. Meet Dre and Des, they are young, gifted, Black. He stayed. She left. Years later they come crashing back into each other’s lives, carrying new secrets and old scars. Caught in the space between memory and reality, they struggle to navigate the shifting borders that threaten to rewrite their past and reshape their future. Shifters’ transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre, St Martin’s Lane, London marks a ground- breaking moment for Benedict Lombe who follows in the footsteps of Natasha Gordon (Nine Night) and Yasmin Joseph (J’Ouvert ) as the third Black British female playwright to have her play staged in the history of the West End. Benedict Lombe (Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-winner for Lava , 2022, Bush Theatre) comments: "Shifters’ transfer is a big moment. Our dreamy, tender, unrepentantly romantic show about two lost souls finding a connection that can't be forgotten was a hit with Bush audiences. Now we get to recreate our magic on a bigger stage! I hope what Shifters does – as well as invite new audiences to fall in love with Des and Dre – is accelerate the pace for the next wave of Black British female playwrights in the West End.” Director and Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre Lynette Linton said: ”We're incredibly proud that Shifters is moving from the Bush to the West End - our second transfer this year. At the Bush we’re all about supporting writers to build sustainable careers, and we’ve loved working with Benedict over three commissions. Benedict writes dialogue and romance in a way that no one else can, and it is my privilege to get to direct her words and reunite with Heather and Tosin. We are so excited to tell this story of Black love on such a big platform - I can't wait for audiences to discover the beauty in this tender, funny and relatable show that is the perfect summer romance.” Heather Agyepong comments: “Shows written by Black British women or plays centering two dark skin leads often don’t reach West End stages so it really feels like we’re part of a legacy. Our stories in all their nuance and beauty have always mattered but it’s great to be on a bigger platform to allow them to shine a little brighter.” Tosin Cole adds: “It’s an honour to have Shifters transfer to the West End. I’m really excited for a second chance to tell this amazing story and to work with this group of talented people again.” Set and Costume Design by Alex Berry , Lighting Design by Neil Austin , Sound Design by Tony Gayle , Composition by Xana , Movement and Intimacy Direction by Shelley Maxwell , Production Dramaturg is Deirdre O’Halloran , Voice Coach is Joel Trill and Casting by Heather Basten CDG . - James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan star in Dennis Kelly's Together | Sonia Friedman
Back to News & Press James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan star in Dennis Kelly's Together Wednesday 12 May 2021 Directed by the Academy, Emmy and BAFTA award-winning director, Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot, The Reader) the film is set in the UK from the first days of the Covid19 lockdown in March 2020 until present day. Together is produced by Guy Heeley (Locke, Denial, London Spy) and the multi-award winning West End and Broadway theatre producer Sonia Friedman (TV credits include: Uncle Vanya, The Dresser, Wolf Hall). This is the story of a family, like so many, who found a way to survive - together. It is the hilarious and heart-breaking story of a husband and wife who are forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of lockdown. James McAvoy said, “Dennis writes so wittily for these characters and his script had me within the first few pages. When I heard Sharon was involved with Stephen Daldry directing it was a no brainer. It’s a hilarious, heartfelt, entertaining and unconsciously funny exploration of a relationship and a couple facing real tragedy across a year we have all lived through. ” Sharon Horgan added, “I think everyone who got involved in this film had no intention of doing a covid drama but then we read Dennis’ script and changed our minds. We shot this in ten days so it was a beautifully stressful experience. Working with Dennis again - and Stephen Daldry and James McAvoy both of whom I’ve admired for years was a joy. But it also felt like we were making something important. And the fact that it feels like news means that the covid death toll, the tragedy of so many lives lost unnecessarily has not been talked about enough”. Writer, Dennis Kelly said: “Together is about a couple who totally hate each other, but have somehow found a way of existing together by not talking to, thinking about, noticing, communicating with or being in the same room as each other - then lockdown happens. It’s about how humans negotiate their shared experiences when they think they have nothing in common other than staying alive, and it's about how you can hate what you love and love what you hate. And Sharon Horgan and James McAvoy are brilliant in it.” Piers Wenger , Director BBC Drama and Rose Garnett , Director BBC Film said: “While rooted in the experience of one family, Together tells the story of us all – Dennis has created a script which will powerfully resonate with audiences, at once funny and uncomfortable whilst warm and deeply moving. With Stephen at the helm and James and Sharon on screen, this is gold-standard drama which we’re proud to be part of.” SHE, played by Horgan is a charity worker, a co-ordinator for all of Europe at a refugee charity. She’s the daughter of a dentist father and an ‘old socialist’ mother - the only grandparent still around. HE, played by McAvoy is a self employed, self-made man who runs a boutique computing consultancy. He’s been forced to furlough his staff and take up growing vegetables - something he’s very proud of. ARTHUR/ARTY is their 10 year-old son and the one thing that has kept his parents relationship together. Until lockdown. Producers, Guy Heeley and Sonia Friedman added: “We feel hugely fortunate that when a story this powerful and timely comes together with talent of this calibre, we can call the BBC and have it on the screen less than six months later. With Dennis’ tender, brutally honest and piercingly funny writing, and Stephen’s visceral directing, James and Sharon have brought this story to life with an astonishing, exhilarating charge which touches on our collective experience of the last very challenging year.” Together , a Shoebox Films and Sonia Friedman Productions film for BBC TWO and BBC Film , is written by Dennis Kelly , produced by Sonia Friedman and Guy Heeley and directed by Stephen Daldry . The executive producers are Dennis Kelly , Rose Garnett , Director BBC Film and Gaynor Holmes for BBC. Deals negotiated by Clare Hardwick of Grey Seal Media on behalf of production and Geraldine Atlee for BBC. Endeavor Content will handle worldwide sales outside of the UK. Daldry is repped by CAA, Kelly is repped by Casarotto Ramsay, McAvoy is repped by United Agents and UTA and Horgan is repped by United Agents and WME. Up Up

When it first went on sale at the Court, it sold out in record time. It became clear to us even then that there was a far larger demand to see the play than the Court run could ever accommodate. We have therefore worked at speed to find the production another home as quickly as possible, which is no mean feat, and we are very grateful to the company for helping us make this happen. It is thrilling to know that wider audiences will now have a chance to see this extraordinary new work from one of our most important writers. The scope, scale and ambition of Jez’s new play deserves this opportunity and I am delighted that together with Royal Court Theatre Productions and Neal Street Productions we are in the privileged position to make it happen. ” The Ferryman is directed by Sam Mendes , designed by Rob Howell , with lighting by Peter Mumford , and music and sound by Nick Powell . - A statement from Sonia Friedman on The Comeback performances | Sonia Friedman
Back to News & Press A statement from Sonia Friedman on The Comeback performances Monday 14 December 2020 "Following the devastating announcement that London will be entering Tier 3 on Wednesday 16th Dec, THE COMEBACK performances from Wednesday 16th Dec onwards have been postponed. Having installed extensive safety measures at the theatre, for the last week of previews we have been welcoming delighted audiences to the Noel Coward Theatre to enjoy this brilliant, funny and heart-warming show. They have left the theatre uplifted, energized and reminded about the power of theatre and the vital role it can play in the mental well-being of the community. To have that so abruptly, cruelly and illogically ripped away is heart-breaking. Not just for those audiences but also for the entire company of performers, creatives, stage crew and other freelancers who for so long have been without work. They all now face yet more uncertainty and pain. But let me be clear –The Comeback WILL be back. It is our intention to resume THE COMEBACK performances as soon as government restrictions allow. Once the new dates have been finalised, the box office will automatically transfer ticket holders’ booking and ticket(s) across to the closest equivalent performance within the limited run; and will contact patrons with all the new details. If ticket holders are unable to attend the new date, they are advised to contact their point of purchase who will provide further assistance. The new dates will be confirmed in the coming weeks. For now, I would like to recognise our entire team for their ongoing support. And, of course, especially our audiences, for your continued commitment to both our production and to our great British theatre." Up Up
